==Valkyrie Occupation== [[File:Valkyrie Occupation.png|thumb|350x350px]] The Valkyrie Order is often changed and improved upon with every new High Queen, and after Stephen raided the Royal Temple of the previous standing queen 200 years ago, the new High Queen has enforced strict laws and regulations on the Valkyries’ involvement in civilian matters. The first major change put in place was strict rules and regulations on Valkyrie tiers and their deployment into civilian areas. Valkyrie forces are divided into classes based on their abilities and link to the Will of Arkenzus, which is determined through extensive meditation and judgement by the High Queen. Those who are closest to Arkenzus are assigned to the Legion, the High Queen’s personal military. Legionnaires are the strongest of the Valkyries and act as commanding officers to the various Valkyrie forces deployed around the Aether, though they are also the rarest of the Valkyries besides the High Queen herself. Those that don’t make it into the Legion are separated into two tiers, the Knights and the Soldiers. Knights generally show more individualism and ability to make decisions, whereas Soldiers are better suited for following orders. Both Soldiers and Knights make up the majority of Valkyries in the Aether. New regulations have limited the Legion’s involvement in protecting and assisting the Aether’s nations. Only allowing Knights and Soldiers to be deployed into civilian areas. The Legion instead is dedicated to protecting and maintaining crucial outposts like prisons, vaults and religious sites, as well as protecting the High Queen at all costs. A Valkyrie’s link to Arkenzus also determines how easily they are resurrected after death. Many religious Valkyries believe it is because Arkenzus wishes strong Valkyries to return to him once their duties are completed, so stronger Valkyries with closer ties to him have to struggle to return to life. It is also said that Arkenzus prefers to send new souls to become Valkyries than let older ones return, so more new Valkyries are created than older ones returning. Scientific understanding of the Valkyrie resurrection process is limited due to heightened security, but researchers believe there is a scientific explanation to their abilities outside of mysticism. Even though the Valkyrie Legion is limited in its involvement in civilian affairs, the Angel nation of Veradex, found in the western Highlands continent, is still under Valkyrie occupation. The Valkyrie Order work closely with Veradex’s government, the Sun Sect, to keep their nation safe from the dangers of recent times, most notably the Blight and the Drac’san war. The Valkyries’ occupation of Veradex means several things for the nation, most notably the Valkyrie Order has complete control over local policing, formation and enforcing of law and impose heavy restrictions on the military capabilities of the Sun Sect, a traditionally warmongering force. These changes over the past few hundred years have impacted Veradex’s culture dramatically, while both decreasing crime and corruption within the nation, the Valkyrie occupation also instills a fear of authority in the population. Additionally the exposure to regular Valkyries has caused the popularity of the Sun Sect’s national religion, the Church of the Valkyrie, to decline as well as shifting into less mystical practises. The reason Veradex is under Valkyrie control, and why the civilians are struggling to adjust to the new Order, is due to the recent collapse of the Angel Empire and ensuing civil war that split the empire into several hostile nations. Including Veradex, the Moon Sect in the eastern highlands as well as many smaller territories and tribes along and beyond Veradex’s borders. The Angel Empire originally spanned almost the entirety of the northern hemisphere, but eventually collapsed with the arrival of Karthuul, the Sun Spirit, who killed numerous high ranking politicians and military officials, crippling communications and control over the gigantic empire. The sudden panic within the empire’s territories eventually became civil unrest, and attempts to retake areas by the empire’s military, the Sun Sect, were met with rebellion and hatred. Eventually the Moon Sect, originally the empire’s scientific research division, attempted to form an alliance with the Sun Sect, who were now in control of the empire’s capital, in an effort to assassinate the Sun Spirit and reform the empire. Unfortunately after Thilus failed to kill Karthuul, distrust began to grow between the Sects, misguided talk of sabotage and defection to Karthuul’s growing acolytes led to a bloody battle between the Sun and Moon Sects, leading to the eventual firing of a superweapon of Sun Sect design into the eastern highlands, near wiping out a majority of the Moon Sect’s forces and irradiating the lands with enriched ambrosium, a substance highly toxic to animal life, and coating all mechanical equipment in a thick irradiated rust, leaving the Moon Sect’s military force either killed, damaged beyond repair or unusable due to the radioactive rust. At this point the Valkyrie Order, recovering from the Sun Spirit’s efforts to weaken their forces through assassination and propaganda, decided to form an official alliance with the Sun Sect to stop the bloodshed. Occupying Brexul, the empire’s capital city, they formed the nation of Veradex and enforced strict borders and military restrictions. The Moon Sect were crippled beyond repair by the war, but the Valkyrie Order attempted to rescue civilians in the area and relocate them into Veradex or refugee camps in the Drifts. Some of the Moon Sect’s figureheads still remain in the eastern lands, but have very little political or military power anymore. Though even while the Valkyries have overall rule in Veradex, and little opposition after the eventual demise of Karthuul, their assistance is required across the entirety of the Aether, and their resources are often stretched thin, leading them to employ the help of local citizens to bulk up their numbers. These local officers have been nicknamed “Honorary Valkyries” as they don the emblem of the Valkyrie Order and use their often restricted Valkyrum weaponry. These additional forces aren’t capable of enacting the same level of enforcement as the Valkyrie Knights, but act as the first line of defense against unlawful activity, invading bandits and hostile creatures. They are also much more popular with local civilians, as the Valkyries are often cold and alienating to those who approach them. The local officers tend to understand local cultures and needs better, and act as a crucial part of the Valkyrie Order. The recruitment process for local officers is extensive, including rigorous physical training and tests, examination of mental capabilities, as well as their awareness and decision making, they also ensure each officer has a clear and perfect understanding of the Valkyrie Order, the Will of Arkenzus, and the responsibilities of the Valkyries. Though there are some exceptions, as individuals with significant history of assisting the Valkyries are sometimes awarded an official position out of respect. Though these officers are often closely watched by the Valkyrie Order and given more restrictions on their abilities to enforce Valkyrie law. One of the Valkyries’ biggest concerns currently, which often requires the assistance of local officers and trusted individuals to address, is the growing presence of bandit camps and tribes in the badlands surrounding the Aether’s organised nations. Increasing numbers of settlements outside of Veradex’s borders have been burnt to the ground or claimed by the numerous “Bandit Kings” in the area. These self proclaimed Kings operate under a religion centred around chaos, survival of the fittest, and an infatuation with riches and jewels. An ideology that conflicts strongly with that of the Valkyries. These bandits radicalise local citizens into joining their ranks through fear and vulnerability. Unfortunately many of the humans sent to the Aether often join their ranks too as a means of survival, straying from the roles the Necromancer envisioned for them. The Valkyrie Order has started looking further out than their own ranks for assistance with this issue, asking regular citizens to stand up for their freedom and their land. Whether these efforts will prove effective though is uncertain.
